A century of faith. That’s what this place whispers. Welcome to Greater Bethany Baptist Church. This isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to resilience and unwavering faith. Founded in 1927 by the late Reverend Wilkerson at 1929 McQuade Street Greater Bethany Baptist Church began its journey. Reverend Wilkerson’s six years of service laid the foundation. Successive pastors like Reverend Cain Reverend Howard and Reverend Wilcox each added their unique contributions. Reverend Wilcox’s visionary leadership led to the purchase of this very building at 401 Stockton Street in 1963. This wasn’t just a transaction. It was a leap of faith a testament to the unwavering belief of dedicated deacons and members.
The church grew. Under Reverend Williams’ pastorate interior upgrades including a baptismal pool were added. A basketball court even appeared benefiting both the church youth and the wider community. Subsequent pastors like Reverend Murray and Reverend Jackson further expanded the church’s reach and impact. Reverend Murray oversaw the paying off of the church mortgage. Reverend Jackson established a youth training program and a pulpit aid board. He also oversaw the operation of a kindergarten. The church even purchased two vans expanding their community outreach.
Reverend John H Perry Sr’s 27-year tenure saw the church grow even more. An elevator was installed. Two additional lots were acquired. His dedication to the church’s growth and expansion was undeniable.
Then in 2008 Reverend Darryl Edwards II became the pastor. His leadership has been marked by significant changes and the implementation of numerous programs. A children’s church was developed responding to the growth of the younger generation. An executive board was established streamlining the church’s operations. A job fair a creative arts ministry a hospitality ministry and a social justice ministry are among the initiatives launched under his leadership. The church also actively participates in ICARE an interfaith coalition working towards social justice.
