“A school motto that resonates with ambition,” a student whispers, “Berilmu, Beretika, Gemilang – Knowledgeable, Ethical, Glorious.” We stand before Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pandan Mewah. This translates to Pandan Mewah National Secondary School. It’s more commonly known as SMK Pandan Mewah. Opened on January 1st, 2004, SMK Pandan Mewah began its journey in a temporary home. It shared space with SK Taman Bukit Teratai for a few months before moving to its current location on Jalan Pandan Mewah 1. Imagine the bustling energy of over 300 Form 1 students and 75 Form 2 students, along with 32 teachers, all navigating those early days. The school’s motto, Berilmu, Beretika, Gemilang, echoes in the halls, a constant reminder of the institution’s values. The very design of the school grounds speaks to its history. Built on Lot No. PT. 19495, the school occupies a substantial area of 60,622 square meters. Seven blocks, a surau (prayer room), a hall, and a security post dot the landscape, testaments to the school’s growth and evolution. In 2009, SMK Pandan Mewah was a vibrant community of 2,324 students. This was nearly 1,200 boys and over 1,100 girls. Guided by 129 teachers, the school was a hub of learning and growth. By 2020, the student population shifted to 1,445. The staff included 112 teachers and 10 additional staff members. This evolution speaks to the changing demographics and educational landscape of the surrounding area. Consider the school’s flag. A white backdrop symbolizes the purity and innocence of the students. The colors of the Malaysian flag – red, blue, and yellow – run across the center. They represent the school badge, a symbol of knowledge and education woven into the fabric of each student’s life. The school badge itself, designed in December 2003 by Encik Ahmad Sale bin Khamsen, is rich with symbolism. The colors of the Jalur Gemilang represent unity, royalty, courage, and purity. An open book at the center signifies lifelong learning and the four elements of the National Philosophy of Education: physical, emotional, spiritual, and intellectual. Five lines converging at the bottom of the badge represent the nib of a pen and the five principles of Rukun Negara. Five circles at the top symbolize physical well-being and the pursuit of excellence in sports. SMK Pandan Mewah is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to the dedication of its teachers, the aspirations of its students, and the vibrant community it serves.
