Twenty-four charming houses. That’s all that remains of John C Henderson’s ambitious project. Welcome to the Henderson Place Historic District a hidden gem on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

This isn’t just a collection of pretty buildings. It’s a captivating snapshot of 19th-century New York. Imagine a time when this half-acre neighborhood was part of a sprawling farm. Then John Jacob Astor and Archibald Gracie owned the land. Finally John C Henderson a wealthy fur importer bought it in the 1850s.

Henderson had a vision. He wanted to create affordable housing. He hired the architectural firm Lamb & Rich. They designed thirty-two two-story Queen Anne style residences. Construction lasted from 1880 to 1882. The houses were intended for people of moderate means. A far cry from the luxury condos that surround the district today.

Sadly some of the original houses disappeared over time. Some were demolished. Others were merged. But twenty-four still stand proudly. They boast beautiful Queen Anne details. Think gables dormers and charming windows. Many houses sit back from the street creating lovely front yards.

This district has quite the past. Famous residents once graced these homes. The renowned stage actors Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne lived here. So did the Duke and Duchess of Richelieu. They lived under an alias though Mr and Mrs Jean Chapelle. Quite the secret for the time.

Henderson Place was designated a historic district in 1969. It’s one of New York City’s earliest. It’s a testament to a time when elegance wasn’t just for the wealthy. This small area survived demolition waves and shifting trends. It stands as a remarkable example of well-preserved architecture. It proves that beauty can be found even in the most modest of places. You can practically feel the history here. It’s a beautiful reminder of New York’s diverse and captivating past.
