Crumbling stone whispers tales of steel. This is the Westburn Viaduct also known as Carmyle Viaduct. A ghostly giant of a disused railway bridge it arches over the River Clyde. It connects Carmyle in Glasgow to Westburn in South Lanarkshire. Built in 1897 it was part of the Glasgow Central Railway linking Carmyle and Newton stations.

Imagine the clatter of trains. Hear the rhythmic chug of steam engines. This impressive structure carried passengers until 1964. Freight trains continued until 1983 serving the Clydebridge Steelworks and Clyde Iron Works. The viaduct’s steel lattice frame and sandstone pillars speak of a bygone era. A further connection to Kirkhill was added in 1904.

The viaduct’s history isn’t all steam and steel. It became a dangerous meeting place for rival youth gangs. Serious violence erupted in 2012. Barriers were strengthened to prevent access. Local schools even collaborated on a lighting project. The aim was to create community bonds across the divide.

Yet the bridge’s story isn’t over. In 2021 Sustrans Scotland proposed its refurbishment. The plan was to transform it into a walking and cycling path. This proposal though met with mixed reactions. Some residents feared it might reignite the past gang violence.

The Westburn Viaduct stands today. A testament to Glasgow’s industrial past and its ongoing community struggles. It waits for its future a potential symbol of reconciliation and renewal. Its silence holds a multitude of stories. From bustling railway lines to troubled teenage years. It is a powerful reminder that even in decay history resonates.
