Back in 1945 after the war ended Grundschule Neurahlstedt started its journey. Classes began in a simple barrack. Frau Nuske later Spiegelberg became the first headmistress. The school’s story is one of growth and adaptation. The original building underwent renovations in the 1950s.
In 1964 Grundschule Neurahlstedt boasted 581 students. A move to a new location followed. This new site near the forest provided twenty classrooms and administrative offices. The school continued to expand adding more classrooms and specialized rooms including music rooms workshops and a gym.
The school adopted a five-day week in 1970. Later a kindergarten was added paving the way for pre-school education. The 1980s saw the construction of a second gymnasium. Grundschule Neurahlstedt embraced change becoming an open all-day school in 1995.
Major renovations took place between 1999 and 2003. The school employed a new teaching staff. The early 2000s saw leadership changes and the introduction of a ‘PraxisTag’ for older students. Expansion plans were paused briefly.
In 2009 renowned artist Noah Wunsch created a stunning mural titled ‘Lichtblick’ or ‘Ray of Light’ for the school’s auditorium. This reflects Grundschule Neurahlstedt’s commitment to the arts. The school also became a JeKI school meaning ‘An Instrument for Every Child’.
The school faced a potential merger and subsequent failed primary school reform. This led to changes in leadership and ongoing renovations. A new playground was completed in 2022. It was celebrated with a large summer festival. The school now supports children from the nearby Höltigbaum refugee center. Grundschule Neurahlstedt continues to evolve. It provides an excellent education. It remains a significant part of the Neurahlstedt community.
