“Yomoguroike” is quite a mouthful isn’t it? We are standing before the 四方黒池の沿革 Statue. It marks a place with a long history. This area was once vital to local agriculture.

The 四方黒池 was a pond. It served as an irrigation source for the surrounding rice fields. This was especially important in the present-day Miyake area. Imagine farmers relying on this water. This was before modern systems existed. The pond played its role until 1945.

Let’s talk about the name. 四方黒池 is read as “Yomoguroike”. The origin of the name remains unclear. It adds a layer of mystery to this place.

The pond’s east side saw clear water flowing from the mountains. Children chased dragonflies. They collected them with nets. This idyllic scene was common until the early Showa era.

In 1934, Naritasan Fudoson’s Osaka branch was established nearby. A town formed along the temple’s path. Residents enjoyed fishing and playing in the water. They swam in the pond. Life was good for them.

However, times changed. In 1950, the area became Narita Town after separating from Miyake. Later in 1958, there were administrative changes. Part of the pond’s east side was reclaimed. The remaining area became managed by Narita. Thus, the 四方黒池 remained.

From 1965 to 1985, large-scale developments occurred. These developments in Narita-Higashimachi increased rainwater runoff into the pond. This caused flooding in the nearby residential areas.

To address this, the city implemented measures in 1986. A rainwater drainage system was built. The 四方黒池 was transformed into a park. It became known as Yomoguroike Water Park.

To improve water quality, a well was dug in 1991. Today, the 四方黒池 is a place for locals to relax. It is a reminder of the area’s past. It shows how it adapted to modern challenges. This statue commemorates that evolution. It marks the history and the community’s resilience.
