Once a sandpit, now a park. Today, we’re exploring the Öjendorfer Park. It is a testament to Hamburg’s resilience.

This park in eastern Hamburg is a haven. The Öjendorfer Park stands as a protected monument. Its heart is the Öjendorfer See. The lake shapes the park’s character.

Let’s dive into its past. From 1925 to 1929, this area was a sandpit. It reached depths of 12 meters. After World War II, a transformation began. From 1950 to 1953, the pit became a dumping ground. Approximately 25 million tons of rubble filled it. The rubble came from Hamburg’s destroyed eastern districts.

Then in 1954, the Schleemer Bach provided a new purpose. Its water filled the remaining parts of the pit. A new lake was born. From 1957 to 1966, a rubble processing plant operated here. It supplied crushed stone for construction. The remaining material shaped the park’s landscape starting in 1958. Gradual planting created the green space you see today. The Öjendorfer Park achieved its final form in 1968.

Did you know the park covers almost 140 hectares? It’s framed by several landmarks. The Öjendorf cemetery lies to the west. The A24 motorway runs to the north. Barsbütteler Weg is to the east. Driftredder is to the south. Together with the cemetery, the Schleemer Bach valley and adjacent gardens, it forms a large green zone. This zone covers almost 400 hectares.

Let’s talk about the park’s features. A circular path mainly surrounds the lake. On the lake’s west side, you’ll find shady spots. These quieter areas lie in the Schleemer Bach’s lowlands. The east side boasts open sunny lawns. The landscape is gently hilly. Meadows and woods alternate.

The Öjendorfer Park offers more than just scenery. Two playgrounds provide fun for children. Two bathing areas invite you to cool off. Large lawns offer space to relax. A kiosk provides refreshments. You can also find a miniature golf course here. Table tennis tables and garden chess sets are available. An artificial hill even offers winter sledding.

From 1971 to 2013, a wooden fort stood on the playground. It was a popular attraction. However, it was demolished during a redesign due to cost reasons.

The Öjendorfer Park is more than just a park. It’s a place where history meets recreation. As you wander through the Öjendorfer Park, remember its journey. From sandpit to rubble dump to a beloved green space, the Öjendorfer Park is a unique landmark.
