A shadow of its former self? Pier 4 whispers tales of transformation. Pier 4 was once a bustling hub of maritime activity. Today, it stands as a testament to Philadelphia’s ever-evolving waterfront.

Pier 4, dating back to 1914, was initially used to store and ship goods. Imagine the pier bustling with workers. They would load and unload cargo from ships docked along the Delaware River. The air was thick with the smell of salt and the sounds of industry.

The early 20th century saw Philadelphia striving to modernize its port infrastructure. The Philadelphia Department of Wharves, Docks and Ferries oversaw the construction of new piers. These piers had to accommodate larger ships. They also enabled simultaneous loading. Pier 4 played a vital role in this transformation.

Inspired by Beaux-Arts architecture, Pier 4 is a remarkable structure. It reflects the ambition and progress of its time. Tower Investments acquired Pier 4 from the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority in August 2022. They started to revamp the building with PrimeSpace Capital.

Today, Pier 4 has been repurposed into a CubeSmart self-storage facility. Bart Blatstein, CEO of Tower Investments, noted it pays homage to its industrial past. It now serves the community with a great service and addition.

Pier 4 has a nearly identical twin, Pier 38. Pier 38 sits on the same lot on Christopher Columbus Boulevard. It is not far from Washington Avenue. Pier 38 has yet to be redeveloped.

The Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia is working to protect Pier 4. They want to safeguard it with a preservation easement. This legal step will ensure that the building’s historic and architectural significance is preserved.

Paul Steinke, the alliance’s executive director, is pleased Pier 4 is back in productive use. He sees it as a major step forward for the growth of the city. Saving important parts of your past and incorporating them into your future makes you feel good about your city.

Pier 4 stands as a symbol of Philadelphia’s ability to adapt and grow. It is part of a broader effort to transform the Central Delaware River waterfront. It contributes to the city’s economy. It creates jobs and instills optimism. It’s a reminder that progress doesn’t have to come at the expense of history.
