Did the fog ever meet the smog right here at Beverly Orthodox Presbyterian Church? Pastor Calvin Malcor once described the church’s location in Los Angeles this way. He led the congregation during a time of growth and change. Beverly Orthodox Presbyterian Church, nestled in the heart of Los Angeles, has a fascinating history. It began in 1936. Members from two PCUSA congregations united, initially meeting in a tent and then a storefront. Imagine their dedication! In 1947, under Pastor Dwight Poundstone’s guidance, the congregation built a proper church building. This was in the then-rural outskirts of Los Angeles. The church thrived in the following decades. Sunday school attendance in the 1950s and 60s averaged around 200 children. Morning worship attracted 125 to 150 people. The congregation even built a two-story educational wing in 1969. This addition speaks to the vibrancy of the Beverly Orthodox Presbyterian Church community. The church celebrated its 60th anniversary in 1996. Former pastors and ministers who grew up in the congregation returned for the occasion. They gave thanks for the church’s enduring presence. Despite the evolving urban landscape around it, Beverly Orthodox Presbyterian Church remained a steadfast beacon of faith. Sadly, declining membership led to its closure in 2006. The church building, once painted white with tan trim and a gray roof, still stands as a silent testament to the congregation’s history.
