Overflowing with history, Suyu-dong invites us to explore its past. Suyu-dong is a neighborhood in Gangbuk District. It is located in Seoul, South Korea. Once Suyu-dong was six administrative dongs. These were reorganized in 2008. Now they form Insu-dong, Ui-dong, and Suyu-dong.
Let’s journey back to Suyu-dong’s origins. It was once Suyu Village. It belonged to Goyang County in Gyeonggi Province. In 1949, it became part of Seongbuk District. A year later, it transitioned from a ri to a dong. In 1973, Suyu-dong became part of Dobong District. Finally, in 1995, it found its place in Gangbuk District.
Did you know Suyu-dong’s name has an interesting story? It originates from ‘su,’ meaning water. ‘Yu’ means overflowing. This refers to the frequent floods from Mountain Triangle. Koreans called it ‘Muneomi’ meaning water overflowing.
Another area of Suyu-dong is known as Bbalae-gol. This name is linked to the water flowing from Samgaksan Mountain. The overflowing water created a village. People came to wash clothes and relax. Even palace maids used this spot. Thus, it became Bbalae-gol meaning washing clothes hill. The name Bbalae-gol is still used today.
There is also the story of Gao-ri. During the Joseon dynasty, a city wall was built in Hanyang. The area extended up to 10 ri. Gao-ri’s topography differed. It added 5 ri to Ui-dong. So it became part of the capital area. Hence the name Gao-ri meaning ‘5 more ri’.
Suyu-dong offers more than just history. Suyu Station is an underground station. It runs on Seoul Subway Line 4. The station opened in April 1985. It serves many passengers daily. In 2012, it served almost 90000 people a day.
From village to neighborhood, Suyu-dong has transformed. Its story is one of water, washing, and distance. It has evolved through administrative changes.
