High above, over 1,000 feet up the North Face of the Rock of Gibraltar, sits Green’s Lodge Battery. This artillery battery whispers tales of sieges and soldiers. It is named after General Sir William Green. He was the chief engineer of Gibraltar. He served here for twenty-two years.
Green’s Lodge Battery was built in 1776. Five 24-pounder guns were first mounted here. Later, the number was reduced to two. The battery saw action during the Great Siege of Gibraltar. That was between 1779 and 1783.
Imagine the scene during the Great Siege. The air is thick with smoke. Cannons roar from Green’s Lodge Battery. They are targeting the enemy forces below. The soldiers are working tirelessly. They defend Gibraltar against attack. In October 1779, Green’s Lodge Battery was so successful. Engineers built another battery at Middle Hill. It was called Rock Gun Battery.
Sir William Green was a key figure in Gibraltar’s history. He designed many military works on the Rock. In 1772, he created the Soldier Artificer Company. This group was the predecessor to the Corps of Royal Sappers and Miners. Green served as chief engineer throughout the Great Siege. He designed and repaired fortifications. After the siege, he became chief engineer of Great Britain.
Over the years, Green’s Lodge Battery has been reconstructed. In the early 20th century, an observation post was added. In the mid-20th century, during World War II, another observation post was built.
Today, Green’s Lodge Battery is in poor condition. Rubble is everywhere. Mountain goats often seek shelter here. But the view is still stunning. You can see North Front Cemetery.
