Envision yourself standing before North Quincy High School a beacon of education. Established in 1926 as North Junior High, it evolved. It gradually added upper grades. North Quincy High School proudly graduated its first senior class in 1934.
The school’s history includes significant renovations. In the 1970s, a new gymnasium and cafeteria were added. A large wing was added in the Brutalist style. This shows how North Quincy High School has changed.
Did you know North Quincy High School’s atrium is dedicated to military service? It is called the Atrium of Honor. It honors alumni who served in the U.S. military. Two Medal of Honor recipients Everett Pope and William Caddy are honored here. Wall panels also recognize E. Alan Brudno, Richard A. Stratton, and Charles Sweeney.
Throughout its history, North Quincy High School has had nine principals. James S. Collins was the first. He served from the school’s opening until 1956. Peter J. Chrisom, a graduate, served from 1972 to 1998. The school’s auditorium is named for him.
From the 1990s to 2011, the Asian student population increased by 40%. By 2021, Asian students made up 53.5% of the student body. White students accounted for 34.2%. North Quincy High School reflects the growing diversity of Quincy.
The school’s athletic teams are known as the Raiders. North Quincy High School competes in the Patriot League. “North” competed in the Atlantic Coast and Old Colony Leagues for many years. These leagues comprised teams from the South Shore.
North Quincy High School offers many clubs and teams. Academic teams include Debate Team, Academic Decathlon, and Math Team. MOON, the Mathematical Organization of North Quincy, competes in the Greater Boston Math League. The Air Force JROTC unit frequently places at local and regional drill competitions.
The Arts are important at North Quincy High School. The Art Club allows students to explore sculpting, drawing, and painting. The NQHS Band performs at places like Six Flags. The Drama Club puts on plays and musicals.
Community service is also key. The Key Club, Interact Club, and NQHS Pride Committee engage in various service projects. The Environmental Stewardship Club promotes renewability. The National Honor Society raises funds for organizations in need. All Quincy and North Quincy High School students must complete community service hours to graduate.
The FIRST Robotics Competition Team, Team HYPER 69, has consistently placed in the quarterfinals. They have won many regional competitions.
North Quincy High School publishes a literary magazine and a yearbook. The Manet yearbook captures memories each year.
Mr. Yakoo, the school mascot, has a controversial history. He was a caricature of alumnus Alan Yacubian. After complaints, the mascot was redesigned in 2020. Yakoo now dons a Revolutionary War-era outfit.
North Quincy High School has exchange programs with Italy and France. These programs alternate each year. Students can study French, Italian, Spanish, and Mandarin.
Several notable alumni have walked these halls. They include Medal of Honor recipients William R. Caddy and Everett P. Pope. Other notable alumni include record producer Louis Bell and YouTuber John B. Allen also known as MrBallen.
