Established in 1905 the Faculty of Medicine boasts a rich history. It began as the Straits Settlements and Federated Malay States Government Medical School in Singapore. This school trained doctors for both Singapore and Malaysia. A significant aspect of its early years was the generous support from local merchants. Tan Jiak Kim a prominent Chinese merchant was a major benefactor. His contributions and those of others helped establish the school’s foundation.

The school faced challenges. World War II disrupted its operations. Sadly some students and staff were killed during the Japanese occupation of Singapore. The SGH War Memorial commemorates their sacrifice. The school’s name changed in 1921. It became the King Edward VII College of Medicine after a donation from the Edward VII Memorial Fund. The College of Medicine Building was built in 1926 to house the growing institution. A dental school was also established.

In 1949 the college merged with Raffles College. This formed the Singapore campus of the University of Malaya. Students from Malaysia had to travel to Singapore for medical education. A major milestone occurred in 1962. The University of Malaya split. One campus remained in Singapore and the other was established in Kuala Lumpur. The Kuala Lumpur campus established its own Faculty of Medicine. This marked the birth of the first medical school in Malaysia. Tan Sri Emeritus Prof Dr Thamboo John Danaraj became the founding dean. A library now bears his name a testament to his legacy.

The Faculty of Medicine Kuala Lumpur has consistently excelled. It’s renowned for its research and education.
