How can a saint be both well-known and shrouded in mystery? This is the paradox of Agios Fanourios. Right here, we stand before Ι. Ν. Αγίου Φανουρίου, a church dedicated to this unique figure.

Agios Fanourios is not like other saints. We don’t know when he was born. We also don’t know where he lived or how he served the Lord. Yet, he is revered. His feast day has been celebrated for over 500 years. People invoke his name in prayer. This is remarkable, considering how little we know.

The story of Agios Fanourios begins with a discovery. Around the year 1500, on the island of Rhodes, his icon was found. It was among the ruins of an ancient church. Nomadic people uncovered it. The other icons were decaying. But Agios Fanourios’ icon was fresh. It looked like it had been painted the day before.

The icon itself tells a story. It depicts a young soldier holding a cross. Around the edges are twelve scenes. These scenes show Agios Fanourios enduring torture. He is stoned. He is burned with candles. Wild beasts surround him. Despite the horrors, he remains steadfast.

Because the icon was newly revealed, Agios Fanourios is called “The Newly Revealed”. He is known as the patron saint of lost things. People pray to him to help recover what has been lost. This tradition is very strong.

When something is found through his help, a special cake is baked. This cake is called Fanouropita. It is brought to church to be blessed. Then, it is shared with the community. Each person says a prayer for St. Fanourios’ mother while eating the cake. There is a recipe with nine ingredients for this pie.

There’s an interesting story about his mother. Tradition says she was a sinner. Agios Fanourios could not convert her during her life. After her death, he prayed for her salvation. Even as he faced his own death, he prayed for those who would pray for his mother’s salvation.

So, a prayer has become tradition. People say, “O Lord, save Fanourios’ mother and help me, a sinner.”

Interestingly, there was some controversy. In 1947, the Holy Synod of Greece questioned his existence. They even issued an encyclical against dedicating churches to him. But the people of Pagkrati, in Athens, insisted on honoring him. So, his memory is still honored here today.

Agios Fanourios’ name offers a clue. It comes from the Greek word “phanerono”. This means “I reveal”. He helps people find not only lost objects, but also hidden truths.

Whether you’ve lost something tangible or are seeking answers, remember Agios Fanourios. The next time you misplace something, perhaps a prayer to Agios Fanourios is in order. And if you find what was lost, consider baking a Fanouropita in gratitude. This tradition connects us to centuries of faith and hope.
