Imagine a fresh breeze. It carries the scent of Alster lake water right to us here at Hamburger Segel-Club. This isn’t just any sailing club. It is a landmark of Hamburg’s sporting history. Since 1892, the HSC has drawn sailing enthusiasts from all over the world.
The Hamburger Segel-Club is one of Germany’s oldest and most active sailing clubs. It sits right on the shores of the Außenalster. This is in the heart of Hamburg. The club’s story began with the Hamburger Yacht-Club. It was established in October 1892. A group split from it in 1895. This group merged with the Hamburger Segel-Verein in 1926. The Hamburger Segel-Club was officially registered in 1927.
Early members were passionate about yacht racing. They joined the Deutscher Segler-Verband quickly after forming the club. In 1925, the club hosted the North Sea Week sailing competition off Heligoland. The Hamburger Segel-Club first helped organize Travemünder Woche in 1927. Kiel Week followed in 1928. The club had 343 members and 87 boats just five years after its establishment. They had hosted 46 competitions. A total of 922 sailcraft took part.
During the Nazi era, between 1934 and 1935, the club lost its autonomy. It was integrated into the National Socialist League for Physical Exercise. After World War II, the club had to be re-established. Carl Georg Gewers led the club through these tough times. He convinced British authorities to return seized sailing craft.
In 1950, the Hamburger Segel-Club again helped organize Kiel Week. Since then the club has grown significantly. Today the Hamburger Segel-Club is known for hosting German, European, and World Championships. They even host the annual “Meisterschaft der Meister”. The club also values touring and recreational sailing. They focus on training young sailors too.
The Hamburger Segel-Club has club boats for its members. The Jubilee is a J70 used for Bundesliga team training. Johann and Jette are club-owned J22s. They participate in the Känguruh-Regatta. They are also available for rent for evening trips on the Alster. The RubiX is a donated X-Yacht X332. It introduces young sailors to regatta sailing on larger boats.
