Hidden within the bustling heart of Beijing lies a story of resilience. This is the story of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, affectionately known as Xitang, the West Church. Our Lady of Mount Carmel stands as a testament to unwavering faith across centuries. It is the last of Beijing’s four historic Catholic churches. Its story begins in 1723 with the Italian Lazarist missionary Teodorico Pedrini. He established this first non-Jesuit church in Beijing. Our Lady of Mount Carmel thrived initially but faced turbulent times. It was destroyed in 1811. The church was rebuilt in 1867, only to be destroyed again during the Boxer Rebellion in 1900.
