Nestled amidst the hills of Changping District, the Yanshou Temple whispers tales of emperors and ancient pines. It’s a place where history intertwines with legend, where the whispers of the past echo in the rustling leaves. The Yanshou Temple predates the grandeur of the Ming Tombs. A saying captures this historical precedence: “First came Yanshou Temple, then the Thirteen Tombs.” Imagine Emperor Yongle, the third Ming emperor, searching for the perfect “eternal resting place” for himself and his descendants. Legend says Liu Bowen, his advisor, recommended this very spot, this cradle of tranquility we now know as Yanshou Temple. Yongle, however, found the area too small for his dynastic ambitions. He shifted his gaze southwest to what is now the site of the Ming Tombs. Yet, the beauty of Yanshou Temple remained etched in Liu Bowen’s heart. He built a temple here, naming it Yanshou, a name echoing with the hopes of longevity and enduring peace. The Yanshou Temple is renowned for its “three treasures”: ancient pine trees, a clear spring, and a jade Buddha. Two of these ancient pines, designated as first-class protected trees, stand as silent sentinels, their branches intertwined in a formation known as “one dragon, one phoenix.” West of the main hall, a spring flows from a crack in a wheat-colored stone, offering a taste of pure, sweet water year-round. Within the temple’s halls, a jade Buddha and a jade Guanyin statue invite quiet contemplation. The Yanshou Temple has witnessed the ebb and flow of time. It has seen empires rise and fall. It has seen restorations and renewals, most recently in 2006, culminating in a grand reopening ceremony in 2013. Today, the Yanshou Temple stands as a testament to resilience, a place where the past converges with the present, inviting you to step into its tranquil embrace and listen to the stories it has to tell.
