A majestic eagle its wings outstretched. That’s what first catches your eye at the Kriegerdenkmal in Kirchlinde. This monument in Dortmund stands as a testament to those who fell in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870-1871.

The Kriegerdenkmal in Kirchlinde is more than just a statue. It’s a poignant reminder of a conflict that shaped Germany. Commissioned in 1880 by the Kirchlinde community it proudly bears the inscription Dedicated to their fallen comrades from the Krieger-Landwehr-Verein zu Kirchlinde. The monument is impressive. A multi-tiered square pedestal decorated with plaques an Iron Cross and arched recesses supports a tapering column. This column culminates in an Ionic capital. On this capital rests a powerful eagle. This magnificent bird symbolizes courage and strength.

Sadly time has taken its toll. Part of the eagle’s left wing is missing. Not all the plaques are legible either. The weathered inscriptions bear witness to the fallen soldiers. Names from battles such as Mars la Tour Metz Sedan Gravelotte Orleans and Paris are visible. Another side proclaims They died a hero’s death for their fatherland. Unfortunately much of the inscription on this side remains unreadable. Only on the fourth side of the pedestal is a name clear: Koeniggratz Will. Weissenburg Strassburg.

The Kriegerdenkmal wasn’t always here. Postcards from 1900 and 1916 show it surrounded by a decorative fence. This was at a different location a few meters away from where it now stands. That spot is now a triangular green traffic island. The decision to consolidate memorials led to its relocation. It now anchors a small memorial grove. This grove also holds memorials from World War I and World War II.

Look closely. Notice the details. This is more than just a monument. It is a silent story. It is a story of bravery sacrifice and remembrance. This is the Kriegerdenkmal in Kirchlinde. It is a piece of history. It is a reminder of those lost. It is a reminder of the price of peace. Remember them.
