Hidden in plain sight Rue Arnould de Vuez whispers tales of a remarkable man. This unassuming street in Lille holds the legacy of Arnould de Vuez a renowned 17th-century painter. He wasn’t just any artist. De Vuez was a master whose life unfolded across continents and courts.

Born near Saint-Omer in 1644 his early life was one of hardship. His father a metalworker struggled to support a large family. Young Arnould however displayed an undeniable talent for drawing. Despite his family’s poverty his father recognized his gift and supported his artistic pursuits.

De Vuez’s journey took him far from his humble beginnings. He apprenticed with a Jewish painter in Saint-Omer then journeyed to Paris and Venice. In Rome he achieved great success winning the prestigious first prize for drawing at the Accademia di San Luca in 1667. His talent brought both acclaim and envy. Threats from jealous rivals forced him to leave Rome.

His career flourished in Paris under the patronage of the powerful Charles Le Brun at the court of Louis XIV. He even received a commission for a may at Notre Dame de Paris. The Incredulity of St Thomas a testament to his skill now resides in the primatiale Saint-Jean de Lyon.

At the age of fifty he moved to Lille. This bustling city provided a fertile ground for his talents. Lille was experiencing a period of significant growth thanks to Louis XIV and the fortifications built by Vauban. De Vuez became the city’s official painter receiving commissions from religious institutions and wealthy patrons alike. His work adorns many churches and buildings in and around Lille.

His style a unique blend of Italian Renaissance and Flemish color was highly regarded. His paintings are deeply imbued with the spirit of his times. They resonate with the richness of the Flemish tradition while bearing the indelible stamp of his own unique vision. The subtle shadows and vibrant hues in his works transport viewers to another era.

De Vuez’s artistic influence extended beyond paintings. Recent research suggests he may be the creator of drawings of the Parthenon before its destruction. Some paintings on Coronelli globes gifted to Louis XIV have also been attributed to him.
