Carpiano, a name that resonates with history and whispers of ancient times. Standing before this charming comune, you’ll feel a sense of timelessness, a feeling of being transported to a world long gone. Carpiano, situated in the Metropolitan City of Milan, boasts a captivating history, deeply entwined with the region’s past.

Carpiano’s origins can be traced back to the Roman era, where it was known as a small settlement named after the dominant tree species in the surrounding forests, the Carpinus, or hornbeam. The name Carpiano itself embodies this connection to the natural world, a testament to the area’s early agriculture and nature’s influence on its inhabitants.

During the Middle Ages, Carpiano continued to flourish, passing through different hands, including those of the Visconti family, the powerful dukes of Milan. This period was also marked by the construction of the Chiesa di San Martino, a beautiful 14th-century church, which you can still see today. Its grand facade, in brick, has a series of salients or projections that add visual interest and a sense of depth.

You can still find Carpiano’s grand Castello, built in the 16th century by the Certosini, who transformed it from a fortified structure into a magnificent grange. The grange, which is a large farm owned by a monastery, was the center of Carpiano’s agriculture, with farmhouses, fields, and vineyards spread out around the imposing castle.

The influence of the Certosini is visible throughout Carpiano, their emphasis on fertile land and efficient cultivation forever changed the face of this village. From the majestic Castello to the charming Chiesa di san Martino, Carpiano’s architecture, history, and atmosphere transport you into a bygone era, where monks walked amongst the fields, and nature prevailed. Carpiano, a quiet village with a loud, fascinating history, is waiting to be explored.
