Founded in 1830 by Leo von Klenze the Staatliches Bauamt Regensburg has a rich history. King Ludwig I commissioned the creation of the highest building authority. In 1872 this led to the establishment of 24 Royal Bavarian land and 24 road and river construction offices. Among them were the Landbauamt and the road and river construction office Regensburg. The road and river construction offices were renamed road construction offices in 1953. Water management tasks were transferred to the water management offices.

The increasing number of federal construction projects prompted the establishment of the Finanzbauamt Regensburg in 1955 by the Oberfinanzdirektion Nuremberg. This later became the Landesbaudirektion. The University of Regensburg’s construction office was established in 1964.

A significant merger took place in 1995. The Landbauamt and the Finanzbauamt were combined to form the Staatliches Hochbauamt Regensburg. Since 2006 the Staatliches Bauamt Regensburg has assumed all tasks of the former Staatliches Hochbauamt Regensburg. It also took over responsibilities from the former University of Regensburg construction office and the road construction office Regensburg.

The Staatliches Bauamt Regensburg’s role is pivotal in the city’s infrastructure. It oversees numerous construction projects. This ensures the city’s continued growth and development. Its history reflects the evolution of Bavarian governance and its impact on Regensburg’s built environment. Today the Staatliches Bauamt Regensburg remains an important institution in Regensburg. It continues to shape the city’s landscape. You are standing before a significant piece of Regensburg’s history. A testament to the enduring effort in planning and building its infrastructure.
