Screaming down a 90-foot drop. That’s the thrill Twister II, later renamed Twister III: Storm Chaser, offers at Elitch Gardens. This wooden coaster, a tribute to its predecessor, Mr. Twister, stands tall against the Denver skyline. Twister II first thrilled riders on May 27, 1995. It was designed by John Pierce, the mastermind behind the legendary Rattler at Six Flags Fiesta Texas. Built by Hensel Phelps Construction Co., Twister II boasts Philadelphia Toboggan Coasters trains. While inspired by Mr. Twister, this version offers a tamer experience. Its motto proudly proclaims, “Built wilder the second time around!” The queue winds through the coaster’s heart, showcasing paintings of Elitch Gardens’ classic coasters. The ride begins beside the railroad tracks, ascending the 100-foot lift hill. From this vantage point, you can admire the Denver skyline and the park below. Then comes the swooping 10-foot drop, a nod to the original Mr. Twister, followed by a 90-foot plunge. The coaster then navigates a large turnaround and another drop. A double-up element wraps around the first drop’s turn before yet another drop and rise lead into the grand helix. Exiting the helix, the track briefly straightens before dropping left into a tunnel beneath the second turnaround. A final straight stretch leads to another turnaround and the final brakes. Twister II, and now Twister III, carries the spirit of Mr. Twister while offering a unique experience. The helix entry sets it apart. Mr. Twister dove directly from the second drop into the helix. Twister II and III take a different path, ascending a double-up hill after the second drop, then dropping and rising again before entering the helix near the station. This change eliminates the tunnel entrance crossing over the second climb. Twister III, the renamed coaster, continues to thrill, a testament to its enduring legacy at Elitch Gardens.
