“Gaps can cause problems,” a dentist once said. Here at Cliff Tooth Gap, we aren’t talking about dental issues. Though, gaps of all sorts have shaped Las Vegas.
Las Vegas emerged from a dusty railroad stop. It became a glittering metropolis. This transformation is thanks to artesian springs. These springs sustained Paiute tribes for thousands of years.
The valley’s artesian springs attracted Native American tribes. Petroglyphs attest to human presence dating back over 10,000 years. Rafael Rivera, the first European visitor, discovered these springs in 1821. He scouted a trade route. It was the Old Spanish Trail between New Mexico and California. Rivera named the valley “Las Vegas.” That’s Spanish for “the meadows.” He was inspired by its spring-watered grasses.
In 1855, Mormon missionaries built a 150-square-foot adobe fort. This established a mail stop between Salt Lake City and Los Angeles. The Mormons left by 1858. Helen Stewart maintained the land. She provided rest for travelers. Senator William Clark of Montana brought the railroad through town in 1905. This changed everything. A land auction drew over 3,000 buyers. They bid on lots along Fremont Street.
Nevada legalized gambling in 1931. This coincided with the Hoover Dam’s construction. Thousands of workers came to the area. Fremont Street’s “Glitter Gulch” emerged by 1946. The El Rancho Vegas resort opened in 1941. This marked the Strip’s beginning. Mobster Bugsy Siegel opened the Flamingo in 1946. This introduced a new level of luxury.
From the 1950s to the early 1960s, Las Vegas developed a unique identity. It was a tourist destination and an atomic-age city. The Nevada Test Site detonated over 100 nuclear bombs above ground between 1951 and 1963. Mushroom clouds were visible from hotel windows. This earned Las Vegas the nickname “Up and Atom City.”
Howard Hughes arrived in 1966. He purchased the Desert Inn. This signaled corporate Las Vegas’s beginning. Steve Wynn ushered in the mega-resort era with the Mirage in 1989. Massive complexes themed after Rome, Egypt, Paris, Venice, and New York transformed the Strip.
The Smith Center for the Performing Arts opened in 2012. The Mob Museum launched in the former federal courthouse that same year. Downtown’s renaissance gained momentum. Circa debuted in 2020. It was the area’s first newly-built hotel-casino since the 1980s. The Vegas Golden Knights reached the Stanley Cup Finals in 2017. They won the trophy in 2023. The Las Vegas Aces have claimed two WNBA championships.
So, as you stand here at Cliff Tooth Gap, remember that gaps can lead to unexpected greatness. Gaps brought water, railroads, workers, tourists, and sports teams. They transformed a desert into a world-renowned destination.
