Across the centuries, the Jewish community of Dortmund has faced hardship and persecution. Yet, the Jüdische Gemeinde Groß-Dortmund stands today as a testament to their resilience. The first Jewish traders appeared in Dortmund in the 11th century. By the 13th century, a Jewish community had taken root. Their existence was precarious. The Christian majority often denied them basic rights. They couldn’t settle in the city center, engage in trade freely, or own land. In 1596, they were expelled from Dortmund for over two hundred years. Imagine the disruption, the heartbreak of leaving their homes and livelihoods. The 19th century brought a revival for the Jüdische Gemeinde Groß-Dortmund. A new community formed. Their first synagogue was consecrated in 1853. Later, a magnificent new synagogue was built on Hiltropwall. Jewish citizens began to hold important positions in Dortmund’s political and social life. This period of flourishing was tragically cut short by the Holocaust. Of the approximately 4,500 members of the Jüdische Gemeinde Groß-Dortmund, some 2,050 men, women, and children were murdered. Despite this unimaginable loss, some survivors returned to Dortmund in 1945. They began the difficult work of rebuilding the Jüdische Gemeinde Groß-Dortmund. Today, with the influx of Jews from the former Soviet Union, the community has grown to around 3,000 members. The Jüdische Gemeinde Groß-Dortmund stands as a symbol of perseverance. It represents the enduring spirit of the Jewish community in Dortmund. Their story is a reminder of the importance of tolerance and understanding.
