Have you ever wondered about the beginnings of a church? This is one such church. In front of us stands the Assembly of God in Katy Church, a place of worship, faith, and community. It wasn’t always this grand structure. It all began in 1984, when a small group of devoted believers, led by a layman, started meeting in a home. Their shared aspirations ignited a spark, one that would soon spread throughout Katy. In 1991, the group made a daring leap of faith. They purchased a former Ford dealership that had suffered a fire, transforming it into a place of prayer and fellowship. It was humble, but it was theirs. This young congregation, brimming with zeal and purpose, grew steadily. They then built a sanctuary on the same property, christening their church Family Life Assembly of God (FLAG). But life had its hurdles. The parking lot could only handle 60 cars, and children’s classes were held in trailers. Still, their community flourished. In 2004 Pastor Albert and Rebekah Cortez stepped in, bringing fresh vision and a renewed sense of direction. They reactivated the mission program, a move that would become a cornerstone of the church’s identity. Pastor Cortez inspired his congregation to live a life of generosity, believing that a supportive community was a thriving one. In 2008, their dedication to the mission was further solidified when FLAG bought a magnificent 8-acre piece of land in south Katy. They celebrated this acquisition with a special ceremony, anointing a rock on the property with oil, a powerful symbol of God’s favor bestowed upon them. Through the years, the Assembly of God in Katy Church has blossomed into a vibrant congregation, touching the lives of many within the Katy area.
