A steaming bowl of danpatjuk. That’s what drew me to Jangkkobang.

Jangkkobang isn’t just any cafe. It’s a temple to the humble red bean. Nestled near Gangnam Station this unassuming shop holds a special place in Seoul’s culinary heart. Its history isn’t etched in ancient stones. Its legacy is woven into the daily ritual of simmering red beans. Every morning starts with a large traditional cauldron. This cauldron bubbles with the promise of sweet porridge and shaved ice delights.

The menu is simple. Danpatjuk sweet red bean porridge warms winter days. Patbingsu shaved ice with sweetened red beans cools summer ones. Both are beloved by all ages. But Jangkkobang’s dedication goes deeper than just deliciousness. The red beans hail from Hongcheong-gun in Gangwon-do. The chestnuts come from Gongju-si in Chungcheongnam-do. Even the jujubes and glutinous rice boast regional origins. Jangkkobang prides itself on using only domestic ingredients. All are directly sourced by the cafe ensuring freshness and quality.

The danpatjuk deserves special mention. It’s served in a unique bowl. This bowl is designed to keep the porridge warm. This is a smart detail often overlooked. It’s the kind of thoughtful touch that speaks volumes about Jangkkobang’s commitment to its craft. And let’s not forget the chapssaltteok the chewy glutinous rice cakes. These little delights are so popular they’re sold in gift boxes. Perfect for sharing a taste of Seoul’s sweet side.

Finding Jangkkobang is half the adventure. Exit 9 of Gangnam Station is your starting point. Look for the large blue glass building. Turn right then left at the Burger King. Jangkkobang will be on your left a welcoming beacon of red bean goodness. Open year-round from 9 am to 10 pm it’s always a good time for a taste of tradition.

So come experience the magic of Jangkkobang. Savor the sweetness. Embrace the simplicity. Let the warm embrace of a perfectly crafted red bean treat remind you of the heart of Seoul.
