The Interdenominational Theological Center, a beacon of learning and faith in Atlanta, stands here before us. ITC Chapel, a central part of this diverse campus, has a story that resonates with the city’s history and its commitment to justice and equality. You see the ITC Chapel in front of you, a beautiful, albeit understated building, built in the 1960s, after the main campus was completed. Before it, the ITC was housed at Gammon Theological Seminary. Imagine the seeds of this place were sown in the early 1940s, dreamt up by President Benjamin Mays of Morehouse College. The idea blossomed, driven by the desire to create a haven for Black theological education. The vision was to unite like-minded institutions to create one powerful center of learning. The first four seminaries – Morehouse School of Religion, Gammon Theological Seminary, Turner Theological Seminary, and Phillips School of Theology – joined forces in 1958. This union attracted the support of the Sealantic Fund, established by John D. Rockefeller Jr., who understood the great potential of this endeavor. The dream materialized. From a humble 97 students and 21 faculty, ITC has grown into a powerhouse of theological education, the largest free-standing African American theological school in the United States. The ITC Chapel is a testament to this dream, welcoming generations of students and leaders.
