“Zwölf Aposteln” they almost called it. A grand name for a grand church. But stand here before Sankt Aposteln in Dortmund and feel its history. Built between 1899 and 1900 this neo-Gothic basilica once soared. Its tower reached 75 meters towards the heavens. A testament to faith and the dedication of its builders August Menken and Wilhelm Bolte.

Sankt Aposteln wasn’t always called Sankt Aposteln. The original wish for a name was “Heiliger Geist”. The archdiocese however had other ideas. So “Twelve Apostles” it almost became a fitting title for a church of such scale. Imagine the awe-inspiring interior. A three-aisled structure of rough-hewn stone. A place of worship that resonated with the community for decades.

But time takes its toll. After years of faithful service Sankt Aposteln fell into disrepair. Parts of the ceiling gave way. The church closed in 2020. Restoration was considered but ultimately deemed unfeasible. The financial burden proved too great. This despite the willingness of the diocese to contribute financially. One condition existed: the building needed to serve the German community. It didn’t. The decision was made. Sankt Aposteln’s days as a place of worship were over.

For over fifty years however Sankt Aposteln held a special place in the hearts of the Croatian Catholic community. They found a spiritual home within its walls. They filled the church and the community hall next door with life. Sundays saw a congregation of around 300 people. A vibrant testament to faith and community. Their presence and activity gave Sankt Aposteln a new lease on life.

The Croatian community has since relocated to St Joseph. Their services are among the best attended in Dortmund. Their devotion to faith has not diminished. Yet the legacy of Sankt Aposteln endures. It reminds us that even in the absence of worship the spirit of faith and community remains. A beautiful building. A piece of Dortmund history.
