Mount Florida. It’s more than just houses and streets. It’s a story etched in history. It began on the Lands of Mount Floridon. Fifteen acres of orchards and gardens surrounded a mansion house. This was in 1814. The house had two dwellings. It boasted gardens filled with fruit trees.
The old house didn’t last. By the 1850s it was a ruin. It stood on Prospecthill Road. It consisted of two semi-detached dwellings. Gardens still surrounded them. Nearby the Clincart Farm existed. It covered ninety-five acres. This land was sold in 1836. It was intended for residential development. The farm itself had a long life. Queen’s Park Football Club bought it. They transformed it. They used its buildings for Lesser Hampden. This lasted for almost a century. The club even claimed it was the oldest football building in the world. Sadly it was demolished in 2021.
Mount Florida is a blend of old and new. Traditional tenements stand alongside high-rise buildings. Cathcart Road is the main artery. It is a major route through Glasgow’s south side.
