Founded in 1953 Elohim Christian Church stands as a testament to faith and community. It began humbly in the homes of Queens residents. These early members sought the Lord together. They were originally from the Bronx’s Damascus Christian Church. Felipe and Luisa Rodriguez provided early leadership. Prayer services were held in the Arce home. Other families like the Cruz and Cajigas families joined.
By 1954 the growing congregation needed a building. They found one in South Ozone Park. The Andino and Baquero families joined expanding the community. In 1969 Elohim Christian Church acquired a larger building. This showcased remarkable growth and God’s blessing. A vibrant children’s ministry flourished under Irene Baquero and Roberto Cruz. They ran the Cadets a program for boys and girls. Vacation Bible School attracted children from the wider community. Pastors Felipe and Luisa Rodriguez led for 34 years. They oversaw spiritual and numerical growth.
In 1988 the Rodriguez’s retired moving to Florida. The church transitioned from the Damascus Council. It joined the Open Bible Council becoming First Hispanic Church of the Open Bible. Pastor Antonio Orona provided interim leadership.
Then in 1990 Elohim Christian Church affiliated with the Assemblies of God. Pastor Hector DelValle Sr and his family assumed leadership. His wife Mirita’s support and his children’s involvement enriched the church’s life. Pastor DelValle served for 18 years. He shepherded the congregation with wisdom and care. Many souls were reached under his guidance. The church experienced significant growth. He mentored around 15 ministers fostering strong leadership development.
Pastor DelValle’s retirement in 2008 marked another transition. Carlos and Rebecca Medina who served as co-pastors succeeded him. They continue to lead Elohim Christian Church today. The church’s story reflects enduring faith resilience and a commitment to serving the community. Today Elohim Christian Church remains a vibrant hub of worship and fellowship in Richmond Hill. It continues the legacy of its founders and pastors.
