Was it a love of chemistry or a passion for healing that drove L.S. Skaggs? Here at the L. S. Skaggs Pharmacy Building, the air hums with the echoes of both. This cutting-edge research and teaching facility, completed in 2016, stands as a testament to Skaggs’ profound impact on pharmaceutical research and education. The L. S. Skaggs Pharmacy Building isn’t just a building. It’s a continuation of a legacy. Connected to the older L.S. Skaggs Hall (the School of Pharmacy) by a stunning four-story atrium, it forms the L. S. Skaggs Pharmacy Institute. This atrium serves as the heart of the complex. Elevators whisk people between floors, connecting the two buildings and providing various gathering spaces. Inside the L. S. Skaggs Pharmacy Building, two-thirds of the space is dedicated to the pursuit of scientific breakthroughs. Laboratories, animal facilities, and support spaces buzz with activity. Office and conference room clusters facilitate collaboration among researchers focused on specific areas of study. The remaining third of the building houses computer and conference spaces for non-laboratory research. It’s a place where ideas are born, tested, and refined, pushing the boundaries of pharmaceutical knowledge. While Sam Skaggs, the man behind the name, may have started his career sweeping floors and making ice cream in his father’s drugstore, his fascination with the pharmacist’s craft led him down a different path. His entrepreneurial spirit and philanthropic heart converged to establish a retail empire and generously support causes like the Skaggs Catholic Center. His legacy lives on, not just in the stores that bear his name, but in the research and education fostered within these walls. The L. S. Skaggs Pharmacy Building stands as a monument to his vision, a place where future generations of pharmacists and researchers continue the pursuit of healing and discovery.
