The Methodist Church Ghana began with Dunwell’s arrival. He was sent by the British Methodist Conference. His mission took root and flourished. Another missionary Rev. T. B. Freeman expanded the church’s reach. He went beyond Cape Coast to the Ashanti Empire and Nigeria. Freeman became known as the father of Methodism in West Africa.

Initially a district of the British Methodist Conference the Methodist Church Ghana gained full independence in 1961. In 1999 it adopted an episcopal structure. Now the church has 22 dioceses each led by a bishop.
