Hidden in the heart of Emmarentia, where leafy streets meet vibrant history, stands Emmarentia Primary School. It’s more than just bricks and mortar. Established on the corner of Hill and Umgeni Roads, it has witnessed generations of children pass through its halls. The school is deeply connected to the rich history of the suburb itself. Emmarentia, the suburb, was named after Emmarentia Margaretha Botha, the wife of Louw Geldenhuys who owned the original Braamfontein Farm upon which the suburb now stands. He built the Emmarentia Dam, a local landmark, and named it in her honor. The Geldenhuys family’s influence is still visible in the area, with street names like Judith Road, named after Frans Geldenhuys’ wife, and Louw Geldenhuys Road, running past the dam.
