Has anyone ever lost their home, only to find it again? Mankhurd, a suburb in Mumbai, tells such a story. Mankhurd is a place of stark contrasts, where colorful high-rises meet sprawling slums. It is a hub of the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) projects, aiming to provide housing for displaced slum dwellers. Mankhurd became a symbol of both hope and despair for thousands. Lallubhai Compound, a massive SRA project in Mankhurd, embodies this paradox. It consists of 65 buildings meant to uplift slum dwellers. Yet, ironically, new slums sprang up around these very buildings. Residents, relocated from areas like Parel, found themselves grappling with inadequate water supply, sanitation issues, and a lack of essential services in Mankhurd. The promised transformation often felt like a cruel deception. Lifts remained non-functional, garbage piled up, and the sense of community that existed in their previous slums vanished. In Mankhurd’s Lallubhai Compound, buildings became vertical slums. Mankhurd also harbors communities like Mandala and Anna Bhau Sathe Nagar, where residents have repeatedly faced demolitions. They rebuilt their homes only to see them destroyed again by bulldozers. These communities embody resilience in the face of displacement. They fought for their right to housing, staging protests and reclaiming their land. Their struggle highlights the complex challenges of urban development. Their stories echo the question: what does it mean to have a home? Mankhurd stands as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for decent housing in Mumbai, a city of dreams often overshadowed by the reality of displacement.
