How about a journey back to 1676? That’s when the story of Nhà thờ Giáo họ Ngọc Đồng really begins. We are standing before a testament to faith, resilience, and the enduring spirit of a community.

Nhà thờ Giáo họ Ngọc Động also known as Ngọc Đường is more than just a church. It’s a living chronicle of Vietnamese Catholicism. Its history is woven into the very fabric of this land.

In 1676, Dominican missionaries first set foot in Phố Hiến. They paved the way for spreading Christianity in u0110àng Ngoài. Since missionaries often journeyed through Ngọc Đồng on their way to Thăng Long, the village embraced Christianity early on.

During the Nguyễn Dynasty’s persecution of Christians in Nam Định province, Hưng Yên became a refuge for missionaries. Bishop Domingo Marti even established his seat here. He served concurrently as the parish priest of Ngọc Đồng. Furthermore, the Lục Thủy Hạ Major Seminary relocated to Ngọc Đồng. It trained seminarians and priests to serve the Gospel.

Under Tự Đức’s reign, religious restrictions intensified. A report falsely accused Lý Tô of forging weapons in Ngọc Đồng. It led provincial authorities to suspect an uprising. On January 9, 1858, 5,000 soldiers besieged Ngọc Đồng. They arrested Father Huấn along with numerous clergy and parishioners. Soldiers burned homes and killed five people.

Despite persecution, the faithful of Ngọc Đồng remained steadfast. Many were ready to sacrifice their lives for their faith. From Minh Mạng’s era, the parish contributed Saint Peter Nguyễn Bá Tuần. During Tự Đức’s reign, Ngọc Đồng added 27 blessed martyrs to the Thái Bình diocese.

Since its founding, Nhà thờ Giáo họ Ngọc Đồng has flourished. It has been under the care of dedicated leaders. These include Bishop Marti Gia and Father Giuse Nguyễn Tri Chúc. Today, the parish includes the communities of Hoàng Độc and Thanh Cù.

Through historical ups and downs, Nhà thờ Giáo họ Ngọc Đồng continues to thrive in faith. While no longer a central diocesan hub, priests and the Dominican Sisters of Thái Bình maintain a constant presence. Parish organizations remain active too. They include the Dominican religious association and various choirs.

Today, Nhà thờ Giáo họ Ngọc Đồng stands as a symbol of faith. It shows hope for the future. It is a testament to the enduring power of community. It’s a story etched in stone and in the hearts of its people.

This is just one chapter in the story of Nhà thờ Giáo họ Ngọc Động. It is a story of a community’s unwavering commitment to their beliefs. A story that continues to unfold even now.
