Propsteikirche St. Johannes Baptist has witnessed Dortmund’s transformation from medieval times to the modern era. Originally built for Dominican monks in 1331, the church was consecrated in 1354. It started as a three-bay choir with a 5/8 apse. Over time, the church grew. An asymmetrical, three-aisled nave was added, transforming it into the Gothic hall church we see today. This expansion was completed in 1458. Notice the near-equal length of the choir and nave. This design reflects the Dominicans’ emphasis on prayer. Propsteikirche St. Johannes Baptist was designed without a steeple. This simplicity is typical of mendicant orders. In 1819, after the Reformation swept through Dortmund and turned its inner-city churches Protestant, Propsteikirche St. Johannes Baptist became the city’s first Catholic parish church. This transition marked a turning point in Dortmund’s religious landscape. It reflects the shifting tides of faith in the city. Later, in 1859, it was elevated to Propsteikirche, signifying its growing importance. Tragically, World War II bombs reduced the church to its outer walls. Yet, like a phoenix from ashes, Propsteikirche St. Johannes Baptist rose again between 1947 and 1964. The church houses a stunning treasure. It is a late-Gothic high altar created by Derick Baegert in the 1470s. This masterpiece features intricate details and realistic scenes teeming with figures. Look closely at the left panel. You’ll find the oldest known image of Dortmund, a fascinating glimpse into the city’s past. Another artistic gem is the statue of the Virgin Mary and Child. This statue, attributed to the Cologne workshop of Master Tilman and dating back to before 1480, exudes a serene beauty. The Propsteikirche St. Johannes Baptist also houses a bone fragment of Saint Reinoldus. This relic, returned to Dortmund in 1982 for the city’s 1100th anniversary, adds another layer of historical significance to this remarkable church.
