On December 2 1918 the first Mass was celebrated in Saint Bonaventure Church. This humble beginning marked the birth of a vibrant parish in West Seneca New York. Father Henry R. Schnur a dedicated priest had purchased a former dance hall. He transformed it into a house of worship. This wasn’t just any dance hall. It was a place of dreams and community gatherings. It was a blank canvas. Father Schnur envisioned a place of spiritual renewal. He tirelessly rallied parishioners. Together they renovated the building. They furnished it. They created a space for prayer. The result was Saint Bonaventure Church. Named for the Seraphic Doctor a follower of Saint Francis of Assisi the church was legally incorporated in 1919. It quickly became a center of faith and community.
Saint Bonaventure Church wasn’t just about bricks and mortar. It was about people. Father Schnur’s dream extended beyond the church walls. He envisioned a parochial school. He planned a larger church. He saw a future filled with spiritual growth. Unfortunately he passed away before seeing these dreams fully realized. However his legacy lived on. Subsequent pastors continued his work. They expanded the church. They built the school. They enhanced the parish complex. Each pastor left their mark. Each contributed to the rich tapestry of Saint Bonaventure’s history.
The church faced challenges. The Great Depression hit. World War II brought uncertainty. Yet the community persevered. Through renovations fundraising efforts and unwavering faith. Saint Bonaventure Church thrived. The mortgage burning ceremony in 1946 marked a new era. The construction of the school building in 1950 represented a significant milestone. This fulfilled a long held vision. It showcased the community’s commitment to education. The school wasn’t just about academics. It was a place where faith and learning intertwined. The addition of an auditorium and a convent further strengthened the parish.
The Second Vatican Council brought liturgical changes. The church sanctuary was renovated. A new altar was installed. Youth Masses with contemporary music were introduced. The parish council was formed to aid the pastor. These changes reflected a dynamic church adapting to the times. The church continued to evolve. It remained a place of welcome and community. It provided spiritual guidance. The years that followed were marked by both growth and transition. A large parish debt was eliminated. The parish faced the challenges of declining population limited financial resources and a shortage of clergy. The merging with St William Parish in 2008 resulted in a new entity. It is now known as St John XXIII Parish. Even though the original buildings of Saint Bonaventure Church were sold. Its legacy endures in the heart of West Seneca. The statue of Saint Bonaventure now displayed in St John XXIII Church is a poignant reminder. It’s a powerful symbol of the parish’s enduring spirit. A spirit of faith perseverance and community. A spirit that lives on.
