Did you know the Dortmund Rathaus we stand before wasn’t always here? The first Rathaus stood on the Alter Markt from 1241 until the mid-1800s. Imagine its age a testament to Dortmund’s rich history. Sadly it fell into disrepair. In 1892 there was even a proposal to turn the old building into a museum. A generous donation of 50000 Marks from brewer and art collector Joseph Cremer saved it. Mayor Schmieding supported the restoration. Unfortunately World War II heavily damaged it. The remaining parts were demolished in 1955.

The next chapter in the Rathaus’s story begins in 1896. Plans for a new Stadthaus on the Olpe river accelerated. This new building housed the entire city administration. It was built between 1897 and 1899. Its style was Neorenaissance elegant and grand. Kaiser Wilhelm II himself inaugurated the Rathaus on August 11 1899. He visited Dortmund to celebrate the opening of the Dortmund harbor and the Dortmund-Ems Canal. Post World War II the Stadthaus needed rebuilding due to damage.

The Rathaus complex grew. The Berswordt-Halle was added in 2002. So was a new Stadthaus. The old Stadthaus’s council chamber however lacked space. A decision was made in 1974/1975 to build the modern Rathaus. This structure now stands directly opposite on the Friedensplatz since 1989. The building is square shaped. Its main front faces the Friedensplatz. With its two steel portals it recalls Dortmund’s history as a steel city.

This modern Rathaus we see today is a symbol of Dortmund’s resilience and progress. It’s a remarkable structure built upon the foundation of a long and complex history. It represents both the city’s industrial past and its modern future. It is a place of political debate and decision-making. A living heart of the city. This Rathaus witnesses the daily life of this vibrant city. It is also a site of civic pride and a reminder of the stories that shaped Dortmund. A testament to a city that persevered through adversity and continues to thrive.
