Hidden within Dortmund’s Lütgendortmund district lies Haus Dellwig. This isn’t just another castle. It’s a story etched in stone and water, a tale of resilience and transformation. Haus Dellwig first whispers its secrets in 1179, mentioned as a simple court. By 1320, the von Dellwig family, knights in service to the Counts of Mark, had firmly rooted themselves here. Imagine Haus Dellwig in the 16th century. Melchior I. von Dellwig, sole survivor of the devastating plague of 1513, reshapes the medieval house into a Renaissance castle. He uses the bones of the old structure, literally, incorporating its foundations and some existing parts. His descendants held high offices within the County of Mark. One, Melchior III., even served as the ducal governor for William V of Jülich-Cleves-Berg in Bochum until 1582. Then, the Thirty Years’ War swept across the land, leaving destruction in its wake. Haus Dellwig was not spared. Imperial troops, led by Colonel Lothar Dietrich von Bönninghausen, shattered the castle’s defenses and left it in ruins. But like a phoenix from the ashes, Haus Dellwig rose again. Melchior IV., son of Melchior III., rebuilt his family’s legacy. He added a sturdy square tower to the southwest corner, a symbol of defiance against the ravages of war. His son, Arnold Georg, and Arnold’s wife, Maria Elisabeth von Pallandt, continued the restoration. They infused the interior with the elegance of Baroque style, completing their work in 1690. A few years later, Adolph Christoph von Dellwig, their son, added the present-day outer bailey. He wasn’t just a builder, he was also the director of the Märkische Knights. His marriage to Katharina Sybilla Baer zu Bernau brought not only love but also the neighboring Haus Holte into the family’s holdings. Haus Dellwig continued to pass through generations, changing hands through inheritance and sales. In 1904, the Gelsenkirchener Bergwerks-AG, a mining company, acquired the estate. The nearby Zollern-Germania mine, while fueling industry, brought a new threat: subsidence. Massive buttresses were erected to prevent the main building from collapsing. The castle’s story takes a turn in 1978. The City of Dortmund purchased the property, beginning a long process of renovation in 1986. Today, the western and northern wings of the outer bailey are leased to a farm. The main house is a private residence. The eastern wing houses the Lütgendortmund Heimatmuseum, a local history museum. As you stand before Haus Dellwig, picture the echoes of its past. Knights and noble families, war and peace, industry and resilience – all woven into the tapestry of this historic place.
