Did you know that Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary started with just two koalas? Jack and Jill were the original residents of this incredible place. Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary wasn’t always the sprawling sanctuary you see before you. It began in 1927 as a small refuge for sick injured and orphaned koalas. At the time koalas were being killed for their fur. Claude Reid a conservationist saw the urgent need to protect them. He established Lone Pine to provide a safe haven.

Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary quickly grew beyond its humble beginnings. It became the world’s first and largest koala sanctuary. The name itself is a tribute to a lone hoop pine tree planted by the Clarkson family on the original 11-acre site. During World War II Lone Pine gained international recognition. American visitors including Douglas MacArthur’s wife came to see the unique Australian animals.

Today Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is much more than a koala refuge. It’s home to approximately 80 species of Australian animals. You can get up close and personal with many of them. You can even feed kangaroos in their 5-acre reserve. More than 130 kangaroos freely roam the area. Rainbow lorikeets visit for specially prepared nectar meals. Twice a day you can feed them yourself. The sanctuary also hosts a daily bird of prey show. You’ll see impressive displays of speed and agility from several different raptors.

The Koala Forest is a highlight. It’s a large enclosure with over 30 koalas. You can watch them feed mid-morning and mid-afternoon. Lone Pine is dedicated to research and conservation. In 2018 they opened the Brisbane Koala Science Institute. This facility houses a research laboratory and a Koala Biobank a genetic depository for koalas. The Institute is open to the public daily.
