Amidst the vibrant energy of Boston Common, let’s pause at the magnificent Brewer Fountain. This isn’t just any fountain. It’s a bronze masterpiece, a replica of a French original that dazzled the world at the 1855 Paris World’s Fair. Brewer Fountain is a gift from Gardner Brewer, a prominent Boston merchant with a keen eye for beauty and a generous spirit. He was so captivated by the fountain in Paris that he commissioned a bronze copy, shipped it across the Atlantic, and presented it to Boston in 1868. Initially, Brewer Fountain graced a spot near Brewer’s home on Beacon Street, close to where John Hancock’s mansion once stood. Around 1917, the fountain found its current home, closer to Tremont Street, where it continues to enchant visitors today. The fountain’s design, a collaboration between French artists Mathurin Moreau and Alexandre Lambert, is a celebration of water. Notice the majestic figures at its base: Neptune, god of the sea, and his wife, Amphitrite. See Acis and Galatea, figures from a Roman myth. Their presence adds a touch of classical mythology to the heart of Boston. Brewer Fountain is not unique to Boston. There are 16 other casts of the original scattered across the globe, from Montreal to Buenos Aires. Yet, each one holds its own special significance within its respective city. This fountain has witnessed over a century and a half of Boston’s history. It has seen countless gatherings, from casual picnics to grand celebrations. It has stood as a silent observer of the city’s joys and sorrows. In 2003, the fountain fell silent, its waters ceasing to flow. However, thanks to a restoration project completed in 2010, Brewer Fountain was brought back to life, its waters flowing once more. The surrounding plaza was also revitalized, becoming a vibrant hub with café tables, food trucks, and even a portable piano for lunchtime jazz performances. Brewer Fountain, a beacon of beauty and history, continues to enrich the heart of Boston Common. It stands as a testament to Gardner Brewer’s generosity and the enduring power of art to inspire and uplift.
