A magnificent organ. That’s what first comes to mind when thinking of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church. Its resonant tones once filled this very spot. This isn’t just any church. Grace Methodist Episcopal Church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community.

Founded in 1870 the church began as a small frame structure. Only three members were present at its dedication. Think of it a tiny seed planted in the burgeoning neighborhood. As the area grew so did the congregation. They outgrew their small chapel twice. A grander structure was needed.

In 1894 the cornerstone was laid for a new church. Designed by J C Cady this building was truly remarkable. It boasted a Lombardic-Romanesque style. Its golden-russet brick and Longmeadow stone detailing stood out. A massive porch and a tall 156-foot tower were prominent features. The interior was beautifully decorated with stained glass windows. A large Sunday school room accommodated 850 pupils. The $75000 price tag shows it was a significant investment. The church was shared with others over the years including the St Gerasimos Greek Orthodox Community and Iglesia Metodista Grace. This building stood as a vibrant community hub for nearly a century.

Tragedy struck on December 11 1983. A devastating fire destroyed the beloved church. This was a tremendous loss for the community. However the spirit of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church was not extinguished. The church rebuilt. This time the new complex included a smaller sanctuary and an apartment building. Sixty-eight units were added. Twelve were for clergy and fifty-six for low-income families. This shows a continued commitment to the community. The dedication of the new facilities took place in 1992. This is a remarkable story of resilience.

The original church’s Jesse Woodberry & Co organ was a masterpiece. Installed in 1895 it boasted 37 ranks three manuals and 33 stops. Imagine the breathtaking sounds it produced. It was sadly lost in the fire. This organ highlights the rich musical heritage of this church. This is just a glimpse into the story of Grace Methodist Episcopal Church. Its history is one of growth community and enduring faith.
