Ever wondered where Borussia Dortmund truly began? It started here at the Dreifaltigkeitskirche. This Roman Catholic church is near Borsigplatz. It stands on Flurstraße. Its story is deeply intertwined with Dortmund’s industrial past and the passion for football.

The Dreifaltigkeitskirche provided a spiritual home for Catholic workers. They migrated to Dortmund for jobs in the coal and steel industries. Imagine Dortmund then. It was a predominantly Protestant city. These newcomers needed a place to practice their faith. The church helped them find community.

Completed in 1900, the Dreifaltigkeitskirche was designed by architect Johannes Franziskus Klomp. It was built as a Romanesque basilica with a cruciform layout and twin towers. These towers once defined the skyline. The church became a vital part of the growing community. In 1903, the parish founded the Vincenz-Waisenhaus. A community center followed in 1908.

But its most famous moment came on December 19, 1909. Young men from the Dreifaltigkeitsgemeinde gathered at the “Zum Wildschütz” tavern. They formed Ballspielverein Borussia 1909. Yes, this church is the birthplace of BVB!

This wasn’t without conflict. Kaplan Hubert Dewald opposed football. He even removed goals from the “Weißen Wiese”. That’s where the young men played on Sundays. But their passion for the game won.

The church suffered greatly during World War II. Bombings from 1943 to 1945 destroyed it. Reconstruction didn’t begin until 1954. Architect Hermann Kessemeier oversaw the rebuilding. He also rebuilt other Dortmund churches like Marienkirche and Petrikirche.

The rebuilt Dreifaltigkeitskirche looks different. It lacks the original transept. Flat tent roofs replaced the pointed towers. The facade and entrance were redesigned. The interior became simpler. A flat wooden beam ceiling and rows of columns define the space. A wooden rosette with a dove symbolizes the Holy Spirit.

Today, the Dreifaltigkeitskirche is more than a historical landmark. It is now known as the BVB-Gründerkirche. It connects the Archdiocese of Paderborn with Borussia Dortmund. Social projects take place here. There are plans to transform it into a “fan church.” Reconstruction is underway until 2026. A “Welcome-Zelt” serves as a temporary meeting place.

Every year, hundreds of BVB fans visit the Dreifaltigkeitskirche. They attend special BVB services. They sing “You’ll Never Walk Alone”. This shows how faith and football intertwine here. The church opens its doors on home game Saturdays. Fans light candles for loved ones and their team.

The Dreifaltigkeitskirche stands as a testament to faith, community, and football. It is a place where history, passion, and spirituality meet. As you stand here, remember the young men who dreamed of a football club. Their dream started here.
