A grand edifice stands before us, a testament to Hamburg’s sporting spirit. This is the Haus des Sports, the home of the Hamburger Sportbund. The Haus des Sports, a cornerstone of Hamburg’s athletic identity, has witnessed the ebb and flow of sporting history since its inception in 1952. The Haus des Sports isn’t just a building. It’s a symbol, a meeting place, and an administrative center for the city’s sports community.

Designed by Ferdinand Streb, the Haus des Sports emerged from the ashes of a former restaurant, “Zum Senator”. The original winning design by Dexel and Elischer couldn’t be realized due to a technicality. They weren’t members of the Association of German Architects (BDA). This opened the door for Streb. Imagine the building rising, four full stories above the ground floor, plus an attic and a basement. This new Haus des Sports, completed in 1952, became a hub for sporting organizations, a physical embodiment of the city’s passion for athletics.

The Haus des Sports stands on a plot of approximately 600 square meters, purchased in 1947 by the Hamburger Sportbund. In 1949, the ruins of the “Zum Senator” restaurant still occupied the site. The building boasts a facade of Cottaer sandstone, a material known for its durability and aesthetic appeal. The Olympic rings, a universal symbol of athleticism and competition, adorn the front. A wrought-iron sculpture by Hans Martin Ruwoldt further enhances the building’s facade, a unique piece of art that captures the energy and dynamism of sport. The Haus des Sports quickly became a recognizable landmark, a testament to Hamburg’s commitment to the world of sports.

The Haus des Sports has played a crucial role in the development and promotion of sports in Hamburg. The Haus des Sports stands as a reminder of Hamburg’s rich sporting history, a vibrant testament to the city’s passion for athletic endeavors.
