On a crisp autumn day in 1901, a gleaming new structure arose amidst the industrial heart of Witten. This was no ordinary factory. It was Witten Hauptbahnhof, a testament to the town’s growing importance in the Ruhr region’s bustling network of railways. Witten Hauptbahnhof wasn’t always the grand station you see today. Its story begins in 1849, a time of burgeoning industrial growth when it was known as Witten West. Built by the Bergisch-Märkische Railway Company, the original station served as a vital link on the Elberfeld–Dortmund line. Initially, it primarily handled freight, reflecting the region’s focus on coal and steel production. As Witten prospered, so did its station. By the late 19th century, the old Witten West station was no longer sufficient. The town needed a station that reflected its progress. Thus began the transformation, culminating in the 1901 reconstruction. The renowned architect Richard Sauerbruch was commissioned to design the new station building, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. This architectural gem now stands proudly as part of the Route Industriekultur, a testament to the region’s rich industrial heritage. Witten Hauptbahnhof has witnessed countless comings and goings throughout its lifetime. It has seen the rise and fall of industries, the echoes of wartime, and the constant evolution of transportation. Today, the station serves as a vital hub, connecting Witten to major cities like Dortmund and Hagen via regional and S-Bahn lines. The station’s four platform tracks hum with the activity of modern-day travelers. While long-distance trains now bypass Witten, opting for faster routes, Witten Hauptbahnhof remains the heart of the town’s rail network. Interestingly, the original freight lines south of the Ruhr, once vital arteries for the region’s industries, still exist. They now form a continuous freight route, a reminder of Witten’s industrial past. As you stand before Witten Hauptbahnhof, take a moment to appreciate its unique history. From its humble beginnings as Witten West to its current grandeur, the station reflects the resilience and transformation of Witten itself. It is more than just a station. It is a living testament to the town’s past, present, and future.
