How about this: a structure so vital, yet often overlooked? This is Cementa in Malmö. It’s a key player in Sweden’s construction industry. Cementa is more than just a building. It’s a testament to the power of cement.

Cementa’s story began in 1871. Skånska Cementaktiebolaget was founded. It later became today’s Cementa. This marked the start of the Swedish cement industry. For over 150 years, cement has been crucial. It has supported the development of society. Roads, bridges, power stations and homes rely on it.

Cementa is now part of Heidelberg Materials. They are a leading global building materials manufacturer. Cementa is Sweden’s only cement producer. Their plants are in Slite and Skövde. Heidelberg Materials Cement Sverige develops and markets cement products. These products improve the productivity and profitability of their customers. The company has 150 years of experience in the cement industry.

Here at the Malmö Northern Harbour stands a modern Cementa import terminal. It was inaugurated in March 2012. IBAU HAMBURG designed and built it. This terminal showcases innovative engineering. Cementa’s ships can unload up to 1,000 tons of cement per hour. The cement goes into a silo. This silo is 90 meters tall and 26 meters in diameter. It can hold 30,000 tons of cement. Trucks and wagons are loaded via three lanes. Each lane handles 250 tons per hour. The terminal operates fully automatically. It runs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Mayor of Malmö called it a new landmark in the Öresund Region.

Cementa is committed to sustainability. Heidelberg Materials is building one of Europe’s largest CCS plants. CCS means Carbon Capture and Storage. It will capture carbon dioxide at the cement factory. Skanska and Benders are among the first to order evoZero cement from Heidelberg Materials. Benders is the first in Sweden to order cement for net-zero concrete.

Cement may seem impersonal to some. But others see its beauty and potential. Cementa has laid the foundation for generations. It continues to build for the future as Heidelberg Materials.
