This isn’t just any theatre. It’s a cornerstone of Quebec’s cultural identity. Since 1968 the Thu00e9u00e2tre d’aujourd’hui has championed Quebec and Canadian playwrights in French. More than 300 productions have graced its stage. Over 30000 spectators attend each season.
Initially housed in a small space on Papineau Street the theatre found a new home on St-Denis Street in 1991. This move marked a significant expansion. The new building boasts a main hall. It can hold up to 275 people. A smaller more intimate space exists too. It’s named after Jean-Claude Germain a pivotal figure in the theatre’s history.
Germain himself along with his troupe Les Enfants de Chu00e9nier helped define the theatre’s mission in 1969. That mission was to showcase Quebec’s dramatic works. Under his direction and later that of others such as Michelle Rossignol the Thu00e9u00e2tre d’aujourd’hui launched the careers of many prominent playwrights. Michel Marc Bouchard Renu00e9 Richard Cyr and many more found their voices here.
