Whispers of flames and radical gatherings still dance around Tron Saint Mary’s Church. Tron Saint Mary’s Church has a fascinating history. It’s a story of resilience and rebirth. The original church, known as the Collegiate Church of St. Mary and St. Ann, dates back to the 1480s. Its tower, a proud sentinel over Trongate, was erected around 1593, with the steeple following in the 1630s. This was more than just a church. The city’s tron, a public weighing beam, stood here, giving the church its common name, the Tron Kirk or Laigh Kirk. Tragedy struck in 1793. A fire, attributed to the infamous Hell Fire Club, ravaged the church. This group of young men, known for their radical political views, accidentally destroyed the building. The tower and steeple miraculously survived. Later, in 1855, arches were constructed at the base of the tower. This clever architectural solution allowed the pavement of the widened Trongate to pass beneath it. The current Tron Saint Mary’s Church building opened in 1965. This new chapter in its story saw the church embrace a strong community focus. Projects were established to foster integration and support. The church’s commitment to the local community continues to this day.
