In 1841, a seed of knowledge was planted in Freiburg. This seed, the Rotteck-Gymnasium, began as a higher citizen school. Its first home was the current Augustinermuseum. It started with just 29 students. The Rotteck-Gymnasium quickly outgrew its initial location. It moved to the Predigertor at Fahnenbergplatz, a site now lost to time. In 1864, it found a temporary home within the historic Schwarzes Kloster. The school’s growth reflected a rising thirst for education in Freiburg. Its focus on science and practical skills set it apart from traditional Latin schools. By 1884, it was officially a Realschule, evolving into an Oberrealschule a decade later. In 1905, the Rotteck-Gymnasium boasted over 1,000 students. This led to the establishment of a branch, which eventually became the Kepler-Gymnasium we know today. The Rotteck-Gymnasium has witnessed history unfold. During World War I, it served as a military hospital. Classes were held at the university and the Ursuline Monastery. The year 1920 marked a significant moment. The school was renamed in honor of Karl von Rotteck, a Freiburg statesman, historian, and politician. Rotteck had championed the creation of a citizen school. He envisioned an institution inspired by French models. It would prioritize education, especially in the sciences. Interestingly, the Rotteck monument stood near the school and university until 2015. World War II brought new disruptions. The Rotteck-Gymnasium’s building was commandeered. Classes were again dispersed to other schools in Freiburg. The school suffered heavy damage during the 1944 air raid. After the war, the surviving students shared the Friedrich-Gymnasium’s facilities. They attended classes in shifts, a testament to their resilience. The Rotteck-Gymnasium’s story is one of resilience and adaptation. The school returned to its Werderstrasse building in 1951. Then it moved to its current modern structure on Lessingstrasse in 1970. Today, the Rotteck-Gymnasium continues to thrive. It offers a robust curriculum. It includes languages, natural sciences, and sports. This educational institution fosters a spirit of inquiry and prepares students for the future. It stands as a symbol of Freiburg’s enduring commitment to education.
