Could this giant rock be a forgotten piece of a celestial puzzle? Here we are before the magnificent 大孤石. It is a silent witness to Beijing’s long and storied past.

The 大孤石 stands as a testament to nature’s artistry. It reminds us of the geological forces that have shaped this land over millennia. Imagine this area thousands of years ago. It was a vastly different landscape.

Beijing’s history stretches back over 3000 years. Before the unification of China in 221 BC, this area was the capital of the ancient states of Ji and Yan. The northern border of ancient China ran close to Beijing. Nomadic tribes often crossed the border. This made Beijing a strategic and political center.

During the first millennia of imperial rule, Beijing was a provincial city. It grew in stature between the 10th and 13th centuries. Nomadic Khitan and Jurchen peoples made the city a capital of their dynasties. These dynasties were the Liao and Jin.

Kublai Khan made Dadu the capital of the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty in 1279. For the first time, all of China was ruled from Beijing. From 1279 onward, Beijing remained China’s capital. There were only two brief interludes. These interludes were from 1368 to 1420 and 1928 to 1949. Beijing served as the seat of power for the Ming dynasty. It also served the Qing dynasty and the early Republic of China. Now it is the capital of the People’s Republic of China.

The earliest human presence in the Beijing area dates back much further. Remains of Peking Man were found near Zhoukoudian in Fangshan District. Peking Man lived here from 770000 to 230000 years ago. Paleolithic Homo sapiens also lived in these caves. This was about 27000 to 10000 years ago.

Over 40 neolithic settlements and burial sites have been found throughout the municipality. These include Zhuannian of Huairou District and Donghulin of Mentougou District. Others are Shangzhai and Beiniantou of Pinggu District and Zhenjiangying of Fangshan. Farming was widespread in this area 6000 to 7000 years ago.

The 大孤石 has witnessed countless seasons. It has silently observed the rise and fall of dynasties. Imagine the armies that marched past this spot. Think of the emperors who planned their rule from nearby palaces.
